MovieMail's Review

British films about the Second World War are in no short supply, but Odette offers something different. A semi-documentary about the life of French-born spy Odette Sansom, it combines standard espionage heroics with a study of stoicism under pressure, drawing a memorable performance from that very English box-office sensation, Anna Neagle, who nails Odette’s bravery, humility and righteous anger superbly.

Odette attracts the attention of special ops after mistakenly posting useful photos to the War Office. Sent to Cannes, she finds herself working with Capt Peter Churchill (Trevor Howard) and a French radio operator (Peter Ustinov). Their espionage scenes, comprising parachute drops, brothel stop-overs and elaborate double-crosses, are tense and well-directed, while the image of Resistance contacts observing missions in near-silence prefigures Melville’s Army in the Shadows. The film’s feeling of authenticity is only enhanced by location shooting, newsreel footage, and even the appearance of special ops officer Maurice Buckmaster as himself.
