MovieMail's Review

This true story of an attempt to scale the north face of the Eiger by two German climbers in the 1930s is a solid adventure tale enhanced by amazing cinematography.

It’s 1936 and the race is on to conquer one of the great challenges in mountaineering: the north face of the Eiger. Climbing partners Toni and Andi find the temptation irresistible, especially when they learn that the Third Reich is keen to see a swastika flying up top and have despatched party loyalists to begin their ascent.
The mountain film was once a staple of German cinema and North Face, based on a true story (told in the 2007 documentary The Beckoning Silence), does a sterling job of reviving the genre. At first, the gradient is gentle as we are introduced to the characters and political situation. However, once the climb begins, the pace gets steeper for the gloriously ill-equipped mountaineers. The horror of the Eiger is brilliantly rendered with vertiginous realism: rocks fall and the frost sinks its teeth in. It’s the most visceral depiction of man against the elements since Touching the Void, and the amazing cinematography makes you feel like you’re right there, hanging off the mountain.

Film Description

A spectacular mountaineering drama set in 1930s Germany. Two German climbers attempt to scale the infamous North Face of the Eiger, aka 'Murder Wall' - the ultimate goal of every European mountaineer. Many have died in the attempt, but Toni Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser are convinced they will make it. Set against a backdrop of political instability and growing menace as the Nazis steadily gain power, the film juxtaposes nature at its harshest and most unforgiving with the complex - and often contradictory - nature of humanity.
