Morris: A Life With Bells On DVD, 2009Availability Delivery Returns Policy
MovieMail's ReviewA pastoral indie ‘mockumentary’, made on a shoestring by the husband-and-wife team of Lucy Akhurst and Charles Thomas Oldham, Morris: A Life With Bells On became an unusual underground hit in 2009. It was passed over by UK distributors and might have sunk without trace, if the resourceful Akhurst and Oldham hadn’t taken it on tour to village halls in south-west England and built up a strong word-of-mouth following, forcing cinema chains to take notice. It’s a success story to match that of the film’s protagonist, Derecq Twist (Oldham himself), a fanatical Morris practitioner whose avant-garde ideas scandalise the pompous Chief Executive of the Morris Circle (Derek Jacobi). Great, affectionate fun is had with the English folk tradition and quarrels about ‘authenticity’, and there are flourishes aplenty in the direction of Christopher Guest’s cod-documentaries (Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind) and the Riverdance phenomenon. Above all, it’s funny, genial and irreverent, with some major-league thespians in supporting roles. Look out especially for Ian Hart, playing the Morris Circle’s ‘enforcer’ - a bruiser with a heart of gold.

DVD Details
Film DescriptionFaux-documentary style British comedy following the fortunes of fictional Morris dancing troupe the Millsham Morris Men. The group's leader, Derecq Twist (Charles Thomas Oldham), is set to rock the Morris dancing world with a performance of the ultimate dance: the legendary Threeple Hammer Damson. Twist is also at the forefront of Extreme Morris, an innovative freeform version of the dance that raises the hackles of Morris's governing body, the deeply traditional Morris Circle. Can Derecq and his men overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of their creative expression? Derek Jacobi, Naomie Harris, Ian Hart, Aidan McArdle and Greg Wise co-star.
