Film Description
Six films starring Meryl Streep: It's Complicated (2009), Out of Africa (1985), Julie & Julia (2009), Kramer vs Kramer (1979), Postcards From The Edge (1990) and Adaptation (2003).
The romantic comedy 'It's Complicated' sees Streep play a mother of three grown-up children who owns a thriving catering business and, after ten years of divorce, enjoys an easy relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Baldwin). But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son's college graduation, an innocent meal together takes a turn for the complicated...
'Out of Africa' is a sweepingly romantic tale of colonial life based on the adventures of Karen Blixen (aka author Isak Dinesen). Karen (Streep) arrives in Africa in 1914 and marries Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke (Klaus Maria Brandauer). Their marriage soon cools into a 'civilised' separation, but Karen finds herself falling in love with the wild, unfamiliar country and its people. Then she meets handsome, fiercely independent hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford) and a hesitant romance ensues.
'Julie and Julia' is a feelgood drama about the lives of two women and their passion for cooking based on the memoirs of Julie Powell and Julia Child. Julie (Streep) is a French cookery expert who became famous through her cookery shows shown on American television in the 1960s and 1970s, while Julia (Adams) is a young American woman who in 2002 decides to attempt to cook all 524 recipes from Julie's cookbook, 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', over the course of one year and chronicle it in an online blog. The intertwined stories of Julie and Julia show the parallels that exist in their very different lives.
In the tearjerker divorce drama 'Kramer vs Kramer', Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) is an art director for an ad agency whose wife (Streep) walks out on him, leaving Ted to care for their son. The additional strain causes Ted to lose his job, although he gradually creates a strong relationship with his boy. When his wife re-appears, demanding custody of the child, Ted decides to fight and is forced to hire an expensive attorney. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Robert Benton, Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman, Best Supporting Actor for Justin Henry and Best Supporting Actress for Meryl Streep.
Based on actress Carrie Fisher's semi-autobiographical novel, the darkly comic drama 'Postcards From the Edge' focuses on the strained relationship between showbiz mother and daughter, Doris Mann (Shirley Maclaine) and Suzanne Vale (Streep). Tensions between the two are brought to a head when Suzanne, fresh out of drug rehabilitation and struggling to revive her flagging career, is forced to stay with her brassy ex-movie star mother during production of a new film.
Nicolas Cage takes the lead in 'Adaptation', a postmodern drama about screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's struggle to adapt Susan Orlean's book 'The Orchid Thief' for the big screen. Riding high on the success of his hit 'Being John Malkovich', Kaufman finds himself in much demand around Hollywood. But this doesn't make the task of adapting the book by Orlean (Streep) about orchid hunter John Laroche (Chris Cooper) any easier. In fact, the troubled writer finds himself in so much trouble that he calls on his clueless twin brother Donald (Cage also) for help. The film is written and directed by 'Being John Malkovich' cohorts Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze.
