In spite of its location on the border between Israel and the West Bank, Lemon Tree is refreshingly free of politics or blood shed. Instead, director Eran Riklis chooses to focus on consequences at a rather more personal level which are irresistibly involving and sincerely poignant in their humble detail. Salma (The Visitor’s Hiam Abbass) is a Palestinian woman whose home sits on the border between the two regions alongside her beloved lemon grove which she tended with her late husband and now serves to keep the memory of him alive. When the Israeli Defence Minister moves in opposite, he requests that her trees be cut down for fear the enemy will use them for cover. Salma refuses to concede and takes her fight against him to the high court. Meanwhile, the Minister’s wife observes her neighbour’s pain from afar, finding commonality with a woman who on the face of it appears culturally so far removed. With its rich performances and fluid plot, Lemon Tree is a thought provoking and absorbing watch.

Film Description

Drama based on the true story of Salma, a Palestinian widow who has lived on the green line border between Israel and the West Bank for decades. When the new Israeli Defense Minister moves in next door to Salma, the Israeli security forces declare her lemon grove a threat to the minister's safety and issue orders to have it uprooted. But the security forces have not reckoned on the grit and determination of the widow, who engages young Palestinian lawyer Ziad Daud (Ali Suliman) and takes her case all the way to the Israeli Supreme Court in her attempt to try and save her trees.
