Film Description
One of the most sumptuous of the postwar cycle of Hollywood epics, David Lean's 7 Oscar-winning retelling of the legend of T.E. Lawrence contains one of the most psychologically complex roles of the age.
Peter O'Toole stars as Lawrence, the Oxford-educated British army officer who aided the Arabs in their revolt against the Turks. Teaming up with Sherif Ali (Omar Sharif), Lawrence crosses a desert in order to join two separate Arab tribes together as a single fighting force. Aiming to achieve Arab sovereignty, he wins a series of military victories but always keeps his eye on the larger picture, doing his best to prevent the subjection of the Arabs to British colonial rule.

Lawrence of Arabia is a film where everything comes together and works. The
magnificent photography captures the sheer physical presence of the desert
and then lays superb, sweeping action on top of it, complemented perfectly
by Maurice Jarre's music. Alec Guinness, Omar Sharif and Anthony Quinn act
magnificently and look as though they belong in the desert and the arid
cities but Peter O'Toole bestrides the film and gives the performance of his
career. His tormented Lawrence brings a depth of character and richness
rarely seen in epics. Three hours long and never a flagging moment, Lawrence
is a genuine contender for the top ten films of all time.

A wonderfully inspiring film, which I first saw in the cinema when I was 12. I was able to video the editors cut, when it was shown on the BBC c 15 years ago. I treasured the video tape so much, that I made sure that it didnt fall into the hands of my estranged wife, when we were dividing the contents of our home. < less

Lawrence Of Arabia, one of Lean's greatest films and a peerless epic in the genre of the first world war. Set against the backdrop of wide, sweeping shots of the vast Arabian desert and filmed beneath a blistering sun, we see Lawrence Of Arabia(Peter O Toole) Lose the prejudices of other World War One soldiers and try to help the warring tribes, the Arabs and the Turks, in the Arabian desert. With help from Ali (Omar Sharif) and Prince Feisel( Alec Guinness), Lawrence strives to do good, however, the tribes do not often se his good intentions. By the end of the war, Lawrence has made the tumultuos journey from an enemy of the people to their friend, and, finally, their God. The cruel and ironic twist to the dramatic story is that after the end of the war, Lawrence returns home to Dorset. One day while out on his motorbike, he swerves to miss oncoming traffic, crashes and dies.
Lean's epic is fantastically filmed and acted, there is not one moment of the film that is dull, despite its epic length. < less
