Film Description
A passionate period drama from Patrice Leconte, set in 1850 on the forgotten island of Saint- Pierre off the coast of Canada, where a man is condemned to death for murder whilst one woman tries to bring meaning to his final days.
Fisherman Neel Auguste (Emir Kusturica) is found guilty of murder and sentenced to death, but there is neither a guillotine, nor an executioner to carry out the sentence on the island. While waiting for a guillotine to arrive from France, Neel is placed under the custody of the Captain and his wife Pauline. Little by little, the condemned man becomes indispensable and his popularity soars. But when the guillotine arrives by boat, justice must be done and the battle to save Neel's life escalates.

A beautifully shot and well acted period drama that draws the viewer in. The plotline is distinctively average but the movie is saved by the supremely talented and watchable Auteuil and Binoche. Attention to detail is superb. Greater than the sum of its parts! < less
