At the age of thirteen, tradition dictates that all witches must leave home, find a city of their own and make a living there. Studio Ghibli’s wise and beautiful fable follows the first steps towards independence of one such witch, Kiki, and her faithful black cat Jiji. Deciding that her only magical talent is to fly, Kiki hits upon the idea of a delivery service; but her future is cast into doubt when her magic begins to fade. Ostensibly a children’s film, (one aimed specifically at 13-year old girls according to Miyazaki), Kiki’s Delivery Service is bound to entrance all but the most hard-hearted viewer. < less
