Judy Garland: The Signature Collection

Busby Berkely, Various , George Cukor, George Sidney, Robert Z Leonard, George B. Seitz, 1938-54

Film Description

A collection of six films starring Judy Garland. Features A Star Is Born (Cukor, 1954), For Me and My Girl (Berkely, 1942), The Harvey Girls (Sidney, 1946), In The Good Old Summertime (Leonard, 1949), Love Finds Andy Hardy (Seitz, 1938), Ziegfeld Girl (Leonard, 1941).

'A Star Is Born' (1954) is a remake of the 1937 classic, this time as a musical about a Hollywood couple going through bad times. Would-be singer Esther Blodgett (Garland) finds herself taken under the wing of fading star Norman Maine (James Mason) when she saves him from making a drunken fool of himself. Changing her name to Vicki Lester, Esther becomes a star, and is soon married to Norman. However, as Vicki's star rises, so Norman's falls. Harold Arlen/Ira Gershwin songs include 'The Man That Got Away'.

In 'For Me and My Gal' (1942), Gene Kelly makes his film debut playing a man who deliberately injures his hand to avoid being drafted into the army. He starts a vaudeville act with a young woman (Garland) and they become determined to play The Palace.

In 'Harvey Girls' (1945), mail-order bride Susan Bradley (Garland) heads out West and ends up working as a waitress for the Fred Harvey chain of restaurants and hotels. The Harvey house faces some stiff competition from the old-fashioned, shoot-'em-up saloon over the road, but the saloon's gambling owner Ned Trent (John Hodiak) takes a shine to Susan. This draws the displeasure of Trent's good-time-girl sweetheart Em (Angela Lansbury) and pretty soon it's pleasant restaurant girls versus brazen saloon hussies in all-out war. The film's big opening number, 'On the Atchinson, Topeka and the Santa Fe', won the 1946 Oscar for Best Song.

'In the Good Old Summertime' (1949) is a musical remake of 'The Shop Around the Corner', set in a Chicago music store. The film finds a sales girl (Garland) corresponding through a dating service with a man (Van Johnson) who turns out to be the manager she detests. 'Love Finds Andy Hardy' (1938) stars Mickey Rooney as Andy, a man frantically trying to juggle two girlfriends (Ann Rutherford and Lana Turner) at the same time. It's the new kid next door (Garland) who helps Andy out of his jam and sings such delightful songs as 'In Between', 'It Never Rains But What It Pours' and 'Meet the Beat of My Heart'.

Finally, in 'Ziegfeld Girl' (1941), an elevator operator (Turner), the wife of a struggling concert violinist (Hedy Lamarr), and a born-in-the-trunk vaudevillian (Garland) are three women on three different paths of life, yet they soon share one dream: to become a Ziegfeld Girl. James Stewart adds to the star wattage, playing the jilted truck-driving beau of Turner's footlight diva.
