Although best known for her movie work, Lee Remick’s finest hour came in this acclaimed series based around the life of Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of the great Prime Minister. While Winston’s story is well known, Jennie also lead a fascinating life, and was frequently exalted by her son, who said that ‘she shone for me like the evening star’.

The charismatic American Jennie Jerome meets Lord Churchill in 1873 and enters into a whirlwind marriage, weathering political scandal, banishment (to Ireland) and bankruptcy. After the death of her husband she channels her energies into her son’s political career, while entering into numerous love affairs and a second marriage. The drama is served well by Julian Mitchell’s authentic script, based on private letters and papers he accessed through the surviving Churchills. Remick more than does justice to this remarkable woman and won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her effervescent performance.

Lee Remick stars as Jennie Jerome, better known as Lady Randolph Churchill through her marriage to the son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough, and mother of the most celebrated British politician of all time, Winston Churchill. Famed for her beauty and intelligence, the vivacious, American-born Jennie was a driving force in the lives of both of these great men; it was at her dining table and in her salon that the young Winston met and conversed with the most brilliant political figures of the age. Jennie recognised her son’s genius for politics and was able to nurture and foster it, and Sir Winston would repeatedly pay homage to her energy, courage and dedication.

In portraying Jennie, acclaimed American actress Lee Remick fulfilled an enduring and dearly held wish. Her performance won her several accolades and awards, including a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
