MovieMail's ReviewDick Powell plays the reporter who gets a supernatural scoop on the next day's news and finds the police on his tail! Its light touch wouldn't have shamed Lubitsch says David Parkinson. It's odd how Gallic exiles in Hollywood never fared as well as their Germanic counterparts. But, while René Clair's satire about an obituary writer who becomes an ace reporter when a ghost feeds him the next day's headlines doesn't touch the landmark pictures he had made either side of the coming of sound, it is still enormously engaging and is staged with a knowing lightness that wouldn't have shamed Ernst Lubitsch.

DVD Details
Film DescriptionLarry Stevens (Dick Powell) is an ambitious newspaper reporter in the late 19th century gaslight era of big city America. Eager to scoop his competitors, Stevens wishes that he could know the news before it happens. When a mysterious old man grants Stevens that power he advises the ambitious reporter against using it. But when Stevens is able to predict what happens twenty-four hours in advance by reading the next day’s paper in advance, he becomes unstoppable: scooping all the other papers, beating the police to big crimes and picking sure-fire winners at the race track. Unstoppable that is, until he learns of his own death tomorrow…
