Film Description

Taking as his source material the incredible 19th century account written by Pierre Riviere concerning how he came to murder his family ('Moi, Pierre Rivière, ayant égorgé ma mère, ma soeur et mon frère...' [I, Pierre Riviere, having slaughtered my mother, my sister and my brother...]), Rene Allio filmed the story in Normandy, just a few miles from where the original events had taken place and using local villagers for his actors. In doing so, he created a unique mix of history, ethnography and psychological drama.

The assisatnt director on the film was Nicolas Philibert (Etre et Avoir). Thirty years later he revisited the area and the actors to see how their lives had changed in the interim.
