MovieMail's Review

A lupine Dirk Bogarde plays a killer on the run who joins up with an emotionally scarred young boy. Directed by Charles Crichton, it's a classic of 1950s British cinema, says Julian Upton.

This British thriller about an unlikely pair of fugitives boasts two first-rate central performances. In an early diversion from his (eventually reluctant) journey to matinee idol, Dirk Bogarde — unshaven, abrasive, lupine — is great as Chris Lloyd, a cuckolded sailor on the run after murdering his wife’s lover. As Robbie, the little scamp who latches onto him, the cherubic Jon Whiteley (in his first film role) is almost effortlessly heartbreaking.

Robbie has a penchant for misbehaviour, but we soon find there’s a good reason for this, and a cautious affection develops between the child and the forbidding older man. Surprisingly (and thankfully) this is handled with no trace of excess sentimentality: assured direction from Charles Crichton reins everything in to a tense, no-nonsense 80 minutes.

Notable also for Eric Cross’s sharply executed location photography — from the bombed-out streets of post-war London to the hills of Dumfries and Galloway and the rocky shores of Portpatrick — Hunted’s recognition as a minor classic of fifties British cinema is long overdue.
