Heimat 2: Chronicle of a Generation DVD, 1992aka Die Zweite Heimat Availability Delivery Returns Policy
MovieMail's ReviewRunning 25 hours and 32 minutes, Die Zweite Heimat is the longest feature film in cinema history. The 2,143-page screenplay took 5,800 hours to write, 557 days to film and another 117 to edit. Its 13 episodes introduce us to 71 principal characters, whose freewheeling interaction touches on many of the key social, political and cultural issues that helped define the 1960s. But, despite its epic scale, this chronicle of country boy Hermann Simon's turbulent decade in the big city has the intimacy of a novel, in which each chapter explores a facet of a Cold War Germany still coming to terms with its Fascist past. There are clearly autobiographical elements in Edgar Reitz's scenario (e.g., he was one of the driving forces behind New German Cinema). But everyone can recognise snapshots from their own youth in the diverse storylines that are played with authentic conviction by a splendid ensemble that's led with aplomb by both Henry Arnold as the impressionable Hermann, and Salome Kammer as his elusive Muse, Clarissa.

Film DescriptionThe original Heimat followed the rural life of Maria Simon and her family through the changing landscape of 20th century Germany, an epic journey from the end of the First World War to 1982. In Heimat 2, originally titled 'Die Zweite Heimat' (The Second Homeland), we travel back to 1960 and take up the story of Maria's son Hermann who turns his back on his small village and heads to Munich to follow his dream and study music. During this era-defining decade of cultural, social and political revolution, Hermann finds love and friendship among the Bohemian collection of musicians, filmmakers and writers that populate his new life.
