Film Description
A tender, downbeat British road trip comedy directed by Damien O'Donnell (East is East) and starring Michael Sheen as Colin, a gentle, rather naive shop owner who decides to give up everything to travel across England's heartlands in pursuit of his first love and his dignity.
His wife Sandra (Jane Robbins) has left him for the captain of his darts team, and taken off with him to Blackpool ('the Las Vegas of the North') for a national darts competition. Colin hops aboard his moped and sets off to track her down, encountering a string of colourful characters along the way who aid him in his journey and make him see that he hasn't exactly been experiencing life to the fullest.

I love this film. I heard an interview with the director on radio 4 and thought it sounded interesting - especially when he described it as a B-road movie. Then it disappeared without trace for a few years. Eventually it's out on DVD and what a gem it is.
It follows the adventures of Colin, a man with a dull life centred on his newsagent's shop and the local darts team, as he travels across the Peak District on his moped to Blackpool to win back his wife.
The humour is gentle and understated but it nevertheless made me laugh out loud in several places. The music (mostly Kate Rusby) is sublime. The story is touching and uplifting. Colin is played brilliantly by the versatile Michael Sheen and many of the other actors - especially the grumpy little girl - are excellent.
This is proof that the British film industry can still deliver brilliant comedy - it's also proof that we are very poor at publicising the fact. < less
