The earliest BBC version of Hamlet was shown in 1947 and featured a young Patrick Troughton as Horatio. Six decades and eight Doctor Whos later, David Tennant has made a return journey from Gallifrey to Elsinore.

Shot on location in high-definition, this specially-filmed version of Gregory Doran’s critically acclaimed 2008 RSC production reunites the original cast including Patrick Stewart as Claudius, Mariah Gale as Ophelia and Pennie Downie as Gertrude.

All-star Hamlets are nothing new – think Ethan Hawke and Mel Gibson on screen and Keanu Reeves on stage – but Tennant’s performance drew rave reviews for its wit and energy. Special mention should also be given to Stewart’s cold, calculating Claudius – a role he played in the BBC’s 1980 production, starring Derek Jacobi.

Film Description

Gregory Doran directs this BBC adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2008 sell-out production of Hamlet featuring David Tennant in the title role and Patrick Stewart in the role of Claudius. Embittered by the death of his father the King, and subsequent marriage of his mother Gertrude (Penny Downie) to his uncle, Claudius (Stewart), Prince Hamlet (Tennant) is further discomfited when he encounters the ghost of his late father on the castle battlements. The ghost tells Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius, and must be avenged. Claudius promises to bring his uncle to justice, but his efforts are continually thwarted by his own indecision, leading to madness and death for those around him.
