Film Description

A strange woman named Mercedes rolls into a strange town, where .she takes on a fake identity and gains employment as a singer at a local casino - the same casino where her brother, a wealthy oil well owner, had mysteriously disappeared. Was he murdered, and if so by whom and for what reason? Was it a deadly game of power play? Could it have been the young business manager who's taken her brother's place or is there a bigger puzzle to unravel?

The mischievous master of surreal satire, Luis Bunuel, mixes up an exotic cocktail of suspense, thriller, romance, melodrama and social commentary to create his own individual take on the Hollywood musical. Made in 1946 this is the first film Luis Bunuel directed in Mexico after officially being accepted as a citizen.
