Alex Davidson finds this dramatisation of David Frost's interview with Richard Nixon brilliant and electric cinema.

The remarkable background story of David Frost’s famous 1977 interview with Richard Nixon is brilliantly dramatised here. The meeting itself is played as a battle of wits; Frost (Martin Sheen) seeks to coax an apology from the former president for Watergate and reinvent his career as a serious journalist, while Nixon (Frank Langella) hopes to use the interview to seal his reputation as a successful statesman. Frost would eventually win the battle against the odds, but only after intense personal risk.

There are some amazing moments of drama in the film. Nixon’s jaw-dropping line, ‘when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal’, still shocks now, while the pressure on Frost to succeed is immense – he had channelled vast sums of his own money to secure the interview and stood to make a massive loss.

The performances are terrific; Langella received the most praise, but Sheen also deserves recognition for his uncanny, insecure Frost. Their interplay is as electric and tense as any thriller.

Film Description

Based on Peter Morgan's stage play, this is a dramatised account of the 1977 TV interviews between former American President Richard Nixon and British talk-show host David Frost. Three years after the Watergate scandal that led to his demise, former president Nixon (Frank Langella) sat down with Frost (Michael Sheen) to discuss, for the first and only time, the details of his term in the White House and his spectacular fall from grace. With the famously steely Nixon confident that he could come out tops in the encounter, and Frost's side questioning whether this was a step too far, media commentators prepared themselves for a PR exercise. But when the interviews got underway, observers were astonished when both men abandoned their usual stances, and chose to conduct an open, honest and frank exchange of views, covering all the areas of concern that had previously remained off-limits. In addition to covering the interviews themselves, the film also traces the difficulties that had to be overcome, and egos that had to massaged, before the historic events could finally take place.
