MovieMail's Review

Guillaume Canet plays the engineer who gets in too deep when he meets Emir Kusturica's Soviet agent. It's a film for those who like their cold-war thrillers icy, says Alexander Ballinger.

It turns out to be more than a little light espionage when Moscow-based engineer Pierre (Guillaume Canet) meets with soviet agent Gregoriev (Emir Kusturica). However his source – codename “Farewell” – is no ordinary spy: he is a KGB colonel who wants to hasten the end of the cold war by handing over state secrets to the West. Pierre imagines his toe-dip into the murky world of spying is over but Gregoriev only wants to do business with this most unlikely of couriers, spiralling Pierre into the colonel’s nightmare world of lies and deceit.

With a nod to Charlie Wilson’s War – in its exposé of the unsung and world-shaping exploits of a colourful central character – and a wink to The Good Shepherd in its relentless dissection of how espionage tears apart the domestic lives of spies, Farewell is a film for those who like their cold-war thrillers icy. Aided by Clint Mansell’s sublime soundtrack the onscreen relationship developed between award-winning director and sometime actor, Kusturica and current French cinema wunderkind Canet makes for compelling viewing.

Film Description

A fine French espionage thriller, Farewell is based on real events that took place during the Cold War in the 1980s.

Sergei Gregoriev (Emir Kusturica), codenamed 'Farewell', is a high-ranking KGB official who starts passing confidential Soviet documents to the French secret services in the hope of undermining the Soviet regime. Working as a courier between Sergei and the French secret services is Pierre (Guillaume Canet), a French engineer living and working in Moscow with his wife Jessica (Alexandra Maria Lara) and two children. As the documents that Sergei is leaking increase in importance, an international ring starts to close in around Sergei and Pierre that involves some of the world's most powerful figures including French President Francois Mitterrand (Philippe Magnan) and US President Ronald Reagan (Fred Ward).
