Winner of the prestigious Golden Bear at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival, Zbanic's first full feature is a powerful drama centring on the troubling legacy of the Yugoslav civil wars of the 1990s and features outstanding performances from its female leads.
Esma is a single mother living with her 12 year-old daughter Sara in the Grbavica area of Sarajevo. Struggling to make ends meet, Esma takes a job at a local bar whilst also attending therapy sessions in an attempt to exorcise her past. Her daughter, a vivacious tomboy, has a close friendship with classmate Samir. They develop a strong bond, having both lost their fathers in the war – or so Sara was told by her mother. It is only through her daughter's impending schooltrip that Esma is forced to finally unveil the truth.
Zbanic has said that her film (Bosnia/Herzegovina's official entry at this year's Academy Awards) is about “love, but a love that is not pure because it has been mixed with hate, disgust, trauma and despair”. At times delicate, at times extremely powerful, this is an assured first feature from a promising new talent.
