It was reported recently that Enid Blyton's estate plan to give her oeuvre a gentle facelift. Their reasoning is simple: the thrilling plots are still in fine working order but modern readers might be distracted by the archaic slang.

Perhaps they were also thinking of this adaptation of the first Famous Five adventure. Even the most sympathetic viewer will concede this 8-part Children's Film Foundation serial has a certain 'period charm': for instance, it's possible today's filmmakers might hesitate before naming a boat 'The Gay Viking'.

But there's nothing old fashioned about the pace of the film; there's something utterly irresistible about the way the Five battle both the elements and a brace of brutal baddies to get the treasure and save the day. Indeed, it shows that the stories don't need jazzing up; as long as audiences want excitement and adventure, they're just the ticket.

Film Description

Five on a Treasure Island, adapted from Enid Blyton's perennially popular first Famous Five novel, is a ripping adventure tale for kids and adults alike, presented in eight exciting installments. Close to the spirit of the book, this Children's Film Foundation serial is full of adventure, mystery (and lashings of ginger ale of course). The author herself helped to cast the film which follows the celebrated gang as they investigate strange goings-on at Kirrin Castle. Will the intrepid Five manage to foil dastardly antique shop owner Luke Undown's desperate attempt to steal Kirrin's treasure from under Uncle Quentin's nose? With enthusiastic and memorable performances from the well cast young actors this is a delightful serial.
