Film Description
Spielberg's early made for TV movie proved so successful that it was given a theatrical release. The plot is straightforward but with heavily psychological overtones. On his way to a meeting, an average Joe (Mr Mann) overtakes a big truck. The unseen truck driver takes against this and thereafter taunts the driver, playing games, speeding up, slowing down, which continues until the car driver confronts his demon. Very effective.

Sheer terror propels the unusual road picture Duel, in which businessman David Mann (a magnificent performance by Dennis Weaver) sets out for an appointment a long way from home. But the mundane prospect of endless driving is soon shattered by a large diesel truck that threatens to run him off the road. The unbelievable horror of the situation rises to devastating effect as Mann realises that the unseen and psychopathic driver is out to kill him. A pioneer film made by a visionary, Duel is a relentless work about everyday living forced into turbulence and the great fear and struggle of carrying away your life in the palm of your hands. < less
