Nicolas Roeg's chilling film is based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier. John Baxter (Donald Sutherland) and his wife Laura (Julie Christie) journey to Venice for an off-season holiday in order to get over the sudden, tragic death of their young daughter. However, upon their arrival John begins to suspect that he possesses latent psychic powers, a pair of weird sisters claim to have had visions of the Baxters' daughter, and John later sees a red-coated figure who resembles his child flitting around the local canals.

Perfect performances by Sutherland and Christie as the leads (their love scene is often cited as one of the best ever filmed), a chilling screenplay rife with forboding and exquisite photgraphy of an Italian winter combine to immerse the viewer in the story.

Early critics of this film,like Jon Landau,in Rolling stone magazine were right.It's a poor film.The film starts well,and quickly goes downhill,to it's dumb slasher movie ending.The erotic scene,is un-done by showing silly clips of the 2 actors,dressing in the middle of the scene.......The director has made several better films.............. < less
