MovieMail's Review

A Greek nightmare of home schooling gone very wrong indeed, Dogtooth sees a man and his wife keep their three college-age children confined to the family compound and teach them to fear the outside world.

A series of laconic vignettes reveals the bizarre routines and skewed ideas that the two girls and their brother have been raised to accept as normal. Surreal vocabulary lessons teach them that, for example, a ‘sea’ is a leather armchair, and a ‘motorway’ is a strong wind; planes flying overhead are just toys that can drop onto the lawn at any moment; and the area outside their property is home to ferocious cats that will slaughter them if they try to leave.

Into this closed-off world the Father brings Christina (the only named character), a young woman he has engaged to see to the son’s sexual appetites, but this outsider has desires of her own that upset their bizarre equilibrium.

Dogtooth won the ‘Un Certain Regard’ Award at Cannes, and it’s resolutely arthouse in intent, understated but with sudden bursts of violence and moments of sexual explicitness. And it proves once and for all that Lars Von Trier doesn’t have the European monopoly on twisted black comedy.

Film Description

Winner of Un Certain regard at Cannes, Dogtooth is a blackly comic Greek psychodrama that sees a mother and father, desperate to shelter their three children from the outside world, create a self-styled utopia inside the walls of their secluded compound. The three children have never ventured outside and spend their days being educated and entertained within the limits of a strict and suppressive system concocted by their father. So far removed are they from the real world, they have their own vocabulary and believe cats to be dangerous wild man-eating predators, aeroplanes flying overhead to be toys and small yellow flowers to be zombies. When the father invites a trusted outsider into their home to service his son's sexual urges, the domestic balance is disturbed and the protective bubble surrounding their lives soon implodes.
