Film Description
A stylish and insanely violent French thriller, Dobermann stars Vincent Cassel and Monica Belluci. Yann LePentrec (Cassel) is 'Le Dobermann' - a 21st century gang leader who pulls off daring heists with the aid of his partner, Nat (Monica Bellucci), and their bizarre gang of reprobates. When fledgling gang member and transvestite Olivier betrays Yann to the sadistic Chief Inspector Sauveur Christini (Tcheky Karyo), the scene is set for a bloody showdown.
Suffused with a comic book sensibility, and featuring police every bit as unhinged and psychotic as the criminals they pursue, Dobermann features great camera work, winning characters and some very funny moments.

The first time I saw this film, one couple walked out during the opening credits! Yep, Dobermann is the type of movie the Daily Mail likes to knee-jerk over-high octane, ludicrously over-the-top comic strip fun, definitely not to be taken seriously. That said, delicate sensibilities may be offended by certain scenes (baby throwing not being the most popular of pastimes) but if you can sit through Baise-Moi, Dobermann is a picnic.
Dobermann (Vincent Cassell), Nat the Gypsy (Monica Bellucci) and their gang are the most notorious bank robbers - determined, cool, and extremely violent. On their trail is the equally violent Christini (Tcheky Karyo, a cop who will stop at nothing to ensure the gang is brought to justice. That the cop is more criminal than the gang he is pursuing is another matter all together.
Although never likely to be canonised as great cinema, as a good old fashioned Cult movie, Dobermann has the lot - insane amphetamine fuelled violence, a thumping techno soundtrack and spirited performances all round. Tcheky Karyo steals the movie against some tough competition and the ending leaves a sequel sized door open.
A Dobermann whose bark is at least equal to it's bite then... < less
