Alex Davidson appreciates Jon Amiel's innovative biopic about evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin and the effect of his pioneering work on his family.

This refreshing, unpredictable film about the writing and publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, the scientific work which proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection, benefits hugely from the directorial daring of Jon Amiel (who made Dennis Potter’s pioneering The Singing Detective).

Avoiding the stuffy narratives of so many biopics, Creation takes a nonlinear approach, at least one wrenching twist, fantasy interludes and stunning nature footage to construct one of the most surprising film biographies of recent years.

Real-life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly play Darwin and his deeply religious wife, Emma. As the scientist’s advocates encourage him to ‘kill God’ by publishing his controversial tome, Darwin is forced to come to terms with how it will affect her. His beloved daughter’s worsening health also leads him into a reassessment of his life’s work, as he begins to realise the impact his theory will have on society.

Bettany gives a strong central performance, and is ably supported by Toby Jones in a juicy supporting role.

Film Description

Director Jon Amiel's biopic explores the crisis of faith suffered by evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany). About to publish the book that will question God's role in creation, Darwin is forced to come to terms with how it will affect his deeply religious wife, Emma (Jennifer Connelly). In addition to his concerns about Emma, the worsening ill health of his beloved daughter Annie soon leads Darwin into a reassessment of his life's work, as he begins to fully realise the impact his theory will have on society.
