MovieMail's Review

Guiseppe Tomatore’s adorable classic conjures up nostalgic memories of both the magic of cinema in years gone by, and the magic of Sicily, seemingly untouched by the Second World War as it sweeps across Europe.

Salvatore is a restless young boy who escapes from the humdrum of rural Italian life by visiting his friend, the gruff but amiable Alfredo who works the projecter at the local Cinema Paradiso.

As film’s depictions of love and romance become more daring, the local priest begins censoring what the cinema shows. This is a beautiful film, at once hilarious and deeply moving.

Film Description

A film that has captured the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide, this poignant tale of a young boy's love affair with the cinema is a delight. It tells the story of Toto, a young boy who grew up fatherless in a small Sicilian village in the 1940s. Now a successful film director, he returns home for the funeral of Alfredo, the projectionist at the local cinema who introduced him to the magic of film. The kissing scene makes you cry just thinking about it! Featuring a lavish score by Ennio Morricone, it won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for the Best Foreign film, as well as 5 Baftas and the Grand Jury prize at Cannes.
