Film Description
A feature-length ITV crime drama, Cause Célèbre was adapted from the play by Terence Rattigan, which in turn was based on the true story of a crime of passion that shocked 1930s Britain.
Helen Mirren stars as Alma, the unhappy wife of elderly, impotent architect Francis Rattenbury (Harry Andrews), who begins a passionate affair with the couple's hired handyman George Bowman (David Morrissey). As the affair grows in intensity, the naïve and inexperienced George finds himself possessed by an uncontrollable jealousy; the result is murder, and a harrowing courtroom drama that will scandalise a nation and engulf Alma in despair.
