British Transport Films Box Set DVD, 1950s-80sAvailability Delivery Returns Policy
MovieMail's ReviewBy any measure, this box set, gathering together all nine volumes of the BFI’s astoundingly popular series of British Transport Films, is a wonderfully diverse collection that shows off the fruits of the British Transport Films Unit, formed in 1949 to support and promote the newly nationalised transport industries, but whose films extended far beyond this initial remit. Any collection that can boast Oscar-nominated nature films, a Stanley Holloway monologue, John Betjeman’s verse, Chris Barber’s music, Dr. Beeching, and a film narrated by a hungry litter basket (among other things), and which takes in ocean terminals, London stations, Gilbert White’s Selborne and the Ardnamurchan Peninsula (among other places) makes a positive virtue of such diversity. And there is no better collection to reveal, in details both large and small, the changes in the social history of the nation from the 1950s to the 1980s.
