Black Joy DVD, 1977Availability Delivery Returns Policy
Film DescriptionNominated for the Palme d'Or award at Cannes in 1977, Anthony Simmon's British culture-clash comedy, Black Joy, tells the tale of Benjamin Ignatius Samuel Jones, a newly arrived, innocent immigrant to London from Guyana. Within hours of arriving, he has been humiliated by officialdom, robbed of his money and found that his only address is a demolished house. Can he survive and come good? He hooks up with streetwise con artist Dave (Norman Beaton), a Caribbean immigrant who has managed to find a niche for himself in a white society, and the two men forge a friendship based on survival of underdogs. The excellent soul and reggae score features Johnny Nash, Billy Paul, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, The Drifters, The Three Degrees and more.
