I was sent a VHS copy of Appointment in London a few years ago. I had never heard of the film, which suprised me as my main interest is Bomber Command. It is a very believable film about the stresses of life on an World War Two bomber squadron. A good mix of nationalities ensures a worldwide appeal. Of the era, 1953, it cannot be beaten for air crew realism. Not too much 'stiff upper lip', more a grim fatalism for the obviously dangerous job in hand. British Rank Studios stalwart Dirk Bogarde is the lead star, with the ominous task of holding his squadron, and himself together, trying to reach his set target of missions. Australian Bill Kerr plays a forward role reflecting the RAAF's contribution, Bryan Forbes and Dinah Sheridan support Dirk as the fighting Brits. It's stirring stuff. It's the only film I've ever watched where I rewound and re-watched immediately. An unsung hero of movies up there with the best. < less
