When Manuela's son dies tragically she sets off on a journey through Barcelona's underworld to meet his father, now a transsexual. Despite the emphasis on gender and masquerade, the film's main theme is grief: friendship, love and relationships centre around this recurring theme. With consummate skill, Almodovar manages to create a film which turns from hilarity to tragedy with lightning speed. A valentine to femininity in all its disguises, motherhood in all its glory and to classic Hollywood melodramas and their diva actresses, this is a masterpiece.
