Film DescriptionRivalry and sexual tension simmer under a glacial surface of detached companionship and leafy academia in this, Harold Pinter and Joseph Losey's second screen collaboration. Pinter's script is suitably spare and perplexing; Losey's direction slow and deliberate. Beginning with the death (in a car crash) of an Oxford student, the film is constructed around enigmatic, emotionally strained flashbacks of the events that precede the accident. On the surface, the film appears to exclude the casual viewer, but, underneath, something draws you in.
