In my personal opinion, the best film version of this enduring story, and the best screen performance by Judy Garland, who was unfairly robbed of a Best Actress Oscar for her role as rising star Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester. Garland simply lights up the screen with her incredible intensity as an actress and singer. When she delivers the soulful torch song ‘The Man That Got Away’ she simply commands the screen with a previously unseen emotional depth that this fine song has never been accorded since. However, despite Garland’s brilliance, plaudits must also go to James Mason as Garland’s alcoholic husband, as well as director George Cukor’s brave direction that really coaxes out the inherent darkness that echoes throughout this tragic tale. < less
