Film Description
A powerful, graphic and bleak psychological drama based on the 5th Commandment. A disaffected young man murders a taxi driver and is put on trial by the state. As usual from Kieslowski, this is a many faceted work, but in the end its overriding theme is the case against the death penalty.

This stunning film is brilliantly made by Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski, who made a series of films based on the Ten Commandments, called Dekalog. Thou shalt not kill, dekalog 5, is the tenet examined here: a young and aimless drifter, Jacek (Miroslaw Baka), wanders through a town as though something is about to snap. Eventually he climbs into a taxi and, in the most savage and brutal way, murders the driver on an isolated strip outside the city. What follows are the ironies of a society which believes itself to be just in the punishment of such killers, without achieving any real resolution. A unique and memorable film, Kieslowski’s vision is haunting, violent, repulsive and will hit you in the face with real cinematic power. < less
