MovieMail's Review

Shot in Chad, this modern-day fable from the director of Abouna and Daratt portrays the psychological fallout from civil war. It's a timely film of universal relevance says Mike McCahill.

Writer-director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s latest urgent dispatch from war-torn Chad centres on a father-son bond dramatically ripped asunder. Former pro swimmer Adam (Youssouf Djaoro) works alongside boisterous offspring Abdel (Diouc Koma) as pool attendants at a luxury hotel. When the hotel’s new owners enforce efficiency measures, Adam finds himself demoted to a lowly gatekeeper position, and obliged to take desperate measures to keep his head above water – a course of action he has cause to regret as the war creeps ever closer.

Despite its title, A Screaming Man remains quietly fierce rather than openly enraged by the state of things, but it’s made compulsive viewing by Haroun’s vivid symbolism – watermelons stand in for a nation being sliced up and devoured whole – and the magnificent Djaoro, whose crestfallen looks shout louder than any words. African cinema needs our support, and this timely and universal film is as good a place as any to start: it absolutely nails how the 'tough decisions' of management rhetoric result in tougher choices still for the workforce.

Film Description

A highly-regarded drama set in modern-day Chad, A Screaming Man sees Youssouf Djaoro play a one-time swimming champion now in his mid-fifties who works as swimming pool manager at a hotel. His life is turned upside down when the hotel is taken over by new owners who make Adam redundant and give the job to his son Abdel. Meanwhile, the country is gripped by civil war as the government comes under attack from rebel forces and all civilians are expected to contribute to the war effort. Humiliated, resentful and penniless, Adam makes a deal with the leader of the local resistance movement that he will live to regret.
