MovieMail's ReviewFollowing on from last month's release of Futtock's End, here's another little 40-minute gem of 1960s comedy, also with Ronnie Barker, who takes his place among other familiar faces of the period such as Bernard Cribbins, Richard Briers and Peter Butterworth. A dialogue-free skit on building site ineptitude and inefficiency (except where tea-breaks are concerned of course), it features scenes as relevant now as then: different utility companies dig the same hole, wet concrete gets trodden in, again, and again, and the characters - the shirking foreman, the hapless architect and the hopeless chippy, are at the right remove from reality. When the married couple finally move in, nearly three children after they placed their deposit, they have every reason to fear what they will find. With no dialogue, the accompanying music assumes greater importance, and Ron Goodwin's score, integrated with post-synched sound effects, is great fun. A simple, well-crafted film, it stands up to re-watching. Some may remember it from the cinema; it was received with such enthusiasm that it played as a support film for a couple of years after its release in 1964.

Film DescriptionRonnie Barker's satirical look at British builders is a noisy but wordless comedy of errors following the building of a young couple's dream house. As the incompetent labourers struggle to complete the house, many cups of tea are made, windows are broken and the same section of road is dug up over and over again by the water board, the electricity board and the gas board. Ronnie Barker's put-upon cement mixer, Peter Butterworth's short-sighted carpenter and Bernard Cribbins' hapless stonemason all contribute to the ensuing chaos. Richard Briers, Bill Fraser and Janet Brown also co-star.
