Film Description
A remake of the 1932 Howard Hawks classic, Scarface sees up-and-coming gangster Tony Montana (Al Pacino) arriving in Miami as a Cuban refugee. With his friend Manny, Tony carries out a hit on a politician, earning him the gratitude of drug dealer Frank Lopez. Tony rises rapidly in the 'organization', but courts disaster when he becomes involved with Lopez' cocaine-addicted wife, Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer). Well paced and superbly acted by Pacino, it's about the price one must sometimes pay for one's lifestyle. Scripted by Oliver Stone.

Brian DePalma's film is surely one of cinema's
greatest remakes, a vision as timeless, disturbing and
powerful as the 1932 original. It is also dedicated
with reverence to director Howard Hawks and writer
Ben Hecht of the original film. Scarface is given an
astonishing performance by Al Pacino as the
title-bearer, a Cuban immigrant to the United States
by the name of Tony Montana, whose own lust for money
and beautiful women he cannot control. A true
psychotic hell-bent on destroying everything that does
not conform to his will, Montana's life spirals
towards a devastating final bloodbath. Michelle
Pfeiffer too is at her best as the fatalistic Elvira,
a cocaine addict who marries Montana. A violent film
which represents the rape of the American Dream, it
has fabulously saturated photography by John A. Alonzo
and stunning direction by DePalma from a heavyweight
screenplay by Oliver Stone. Giorgio Moroder's score
also underpins the images in Scarface, a dark film of
incredible power. < less
