Film Description
One of the most famous of Chaplin's films, City Lights sees The Tramp fall in love with a beautiful, blind flower girl, whose family is in financial trouble. When he learns that an operation may restore the girl's sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have surgery. The Tramp's friendship with a wealthy man allows him to be the girl's benefactor and suitor - but will she love him even when she discovers that he is not a wealthy duke, but a tramp? Sentimental maybe, but sparkling with scarcely diminished brilliance, the famous moving finale will have even the most hardened cynic gulping.

I worked on Countess From Hong Kong as Best Boy, part of the IATSE crew Local 52. Seeing Mr. Chaplin in person was the greatest thrill of my life. Watching him off camera a very isolated man, a very elegant man and after all these years he made an impression on me that still lingers.... an extraordinary person to be near, it was as though he walked with a magnetic or electrical field surrounding him. I now know the real meaning of CHARISMA ! < less

Still looming largely as one of the greatest films of all time, City Lights will make adults laugh and cry all over again. Charlie Chaplin works pure movie magic in his story of the blind flower girl who falls in love with what she belives to be a wealthy man, after she hears the car door shut on an expensive limousine. It is in fact the Little Tramp who is her real benefactor, mistaken for a genleman, and after falling in love with her, tries to raise money for an operation to restore her sight. Charlie’s friendship with a drunken millionaire takes him to the heights of city life, brawling nights out on the town, and a hilarious boxing scene in which he tries to win a prizefight for his girl. Charm, wit and endless humour are just part of the magical and moving experience that is City Lights, showcasting one of the greatest endings ever. Enjoy this wonderful film, which will make you wish you were there!
