MovieMail's Review

Director Rowan Joffe captures the novel’s stark cynicism in this new adaptation. And in the lead role of Pinkie, Sam Riley ably fills Richard Attenborough’s shoes, says Julian Upton.

By staging the action amid the Brighton riots of 1964, this pacy ‘update’ of Graham Greene’s 1930s crime novel successfully balances the weary, austere air of a creaky and impoverished England with a new era of teenage violence and rebellion.

Of course, looming large over the proceedings is the spectre of the Boulting Brothers’ seminal 1947 version —which first launched Richard Attenborough to stardom as juvenile gangster Pinkie Brown — but, here, first-time director Rowan Joffe (son of Roland) is free to capture the novel’s stark cynicism and brutality with considerably more force, and the youth riot angle serves as an ingenious backdrop for the copious seafront knife fights.

As the fearless but naïve Pinkie, Sam Riley ably fills Attenborough’s shoes (while looking, somewhat more believably, like a 17-year-old), and Joffe pays the kind of attention to period detail that was noticeably missing from the film version of The Who’s nod to the ‘Mods vs Rockers’ phenomenon, Quadrophenia. Solid support is also on hand from a strong cast of British luminaries, including Helen Mirren and John Hurt.

Film Description

Based upon the classic novel by Graham Greene, Brighton Rock is a gripping thriller. The directorial feature debut of screenwriter Rowan Joffe (28 Weeks Later), Brighton Rock features two generations of Britain's greatest acting talent including Sam Riley (Control), Andrea Riseborough (Never Let Me Go), Helen Mirren (The Queen) and John Hurt (The Elephant Man).

The year is 1964. The place is Brighton. A once quiet seaside town is suddenly overrun by gangs of sharp-suited Mods and greasy Rockers looking for a riot. Amongst the chaos lurks top Mod and gangster Pinkie Brown (Sam Riley). Ruthless, ambitious and horrifically violent, Pinkie will stop at nothing in his brutal quest to make a name for himself within the criminal underworld. But when a cold-blooded killing links him to a waitress named Rose, he uses seduction to secure her silence. Can Rose be saved in time from Pinkie, or will he drag her further into a world of death and damnation?
