MovieMail's Review

An insight into the complexities of gay life in modern Britain, Andrew Haigh's lean feature is a tense, moving love story that punches well above its weight, says Alexander Ballinger.

Like its svelte leading men there’s barely an ounce of fat on Andrew Haigh’s lean debut feature. Hardly surprising as he’s a consummate filmmaker who learnt his craft the hard way, spending the last decade grafting in the editing rooms of exacting directors like Ridley Scott, Mike Newell and Harmony Korine.

The film’s premise is simple enough: after a drunken nightclub encounter, awkward pool attendant (Tom Cullen) wakes up with gregarious art student (Chris New) in what appears to be yet another perfunctory one-night stand. However, over the next drug-fuelled 36 hours an intense love affair develops between the couple as they walk, talk and argue through the highways and high rises of a surprisingly photogenic Nottingham.
One to add to gay classics Happy Together (1997) and Drôle de Felix (2000) Weekend punches well above its low-budget, independent weight. Remarkably, it succeeds in being both a revelatory insight into the complexities of gay life in modern Britain while remaining a tense, moving love story in the tradition of sex, lies, and videotape (1989) and Before Sunrise (1995).

Film Description

A British drama set in Nottingham, Weekend is about two gay men whose one night stand turns into something deeper. After spending Friday night drinking with his straight friends, Russell (Tom Cullen) heads out to a gay club in search of sex. There he meets Glen (Chris New), and the two go home together. But what both men expected to be a one-night stand turns into a more powerful connection as they go on to spend the rest of weekend talking, drinking, having sex, laughing and sleeping together. However, with Glen set to relocate to the US on Monday, the two must now decide if their liaison will endure.
