MovieMail's Review

Triple prize winner at the British Independent Film Awards, this hard-bitten directorial debut features amazing performances from Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman. See it, says Mike McCahill.

Dog-lovers be warned: actor Paddy Considine’s directorial debut opens with a man ferociously kicking his pet pooch to death. Astonishingly, this is Tyrannosaur’s idea of a hero. Alcoholic loner Joseph (Peter Mullan) is a raging bull of a man – so we fear further bad things when he seeks shelter one day in a charity shop, and encounters somebody seemingly as fragile as china. Olivia Colman’s devoutly Christian Hannah has, it turns out, worse yet waiting at home: a husband (Eddie Marsan) hiding abusive tendencies beneath an outwardly respectable veneer.

While uncompromising in his depiction of human frailty, Considine leavens any grimness with black humour, and the perverse love triangle that results showcases outstanding performances. Mullan (My Name is Joe) continues to find fresh and surprisingly funny ways of exploring the hard man archetype, yet Peep Show’s Colman is if anything better still, making both moving and disturbing the revelation of the extent to which she’s been touched by those around her. Challenging viewing, certainly, but Tyrannosaur finally allows even the mousy Hannah to roar.

Film Description

Tyrannosaur, Paddy Considine's powerful and affecting directorial debut, has been hailed as one of the best British films of the year. It follows the story of two lonely, damaged people brought together by circumstance.

Joseph (Peter Mullan) is an unemployed widower, drinker, and a man crippled by his own volatile temperament and furious anger. Hannah (Olivia Colman) is a Christian worker at a charity shop, a respectable woman who appears wholesome and happy. When the pair are brought together, Hannah appears as Joseph's potential saviour, someone who can temper his fury and offer him warmth, kindness and acceptance.

As their story develops Hannah's own secrets are revealed - her relationship with husband James (Eddie Marsan) is violent and abusive - and as events spiral out of control, Joseph becomes her source of succour and comfort.
