Annette Bening and Julianne Moore play the lesbian couple whose kids want to meet their father in this sophisticated comedy. It has wide appeal, says Alex Davidson.

A rare film that offers two strong roles for two of our best actresses, The Kids Are All Right gives the audience a fresh and funny representation of an unconventional family. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore play a lesbian couple with a son and daughter who they conceived through artificial insemination. The former decides he wants to meet his biological father (Mark Ruffalo), and he and his sister track him down. Gradually this affable newcomer infiltrates himself into the family unit, with potentially calamitous results.

Director Lisa Cholodenko (High Art, Laurel Canyon), who also co-wrote the screenplay, delivers a witty and warm depiction of a loving relationship, and coaxes brilliant performances from her cast - Bening and Ruffalo have received Oscar nominations, as has the film itself. The film refuses to judge its flawed characters - Bening is neurotic, Moore is flaky, Ruffalo is too nonchalant – and brings out their humanity. In spite of its gay subject matter, this is a film that will appeal to all audiences who appreciate sophisticated, well observed comedy. And the ending is just lovely.

Film Description

Winner of a 2011 Golden Globe, Lisa Cholodenko's comedy The Kids Are All Right stars Annette Bening (who also won a Golden Globe for her performance) and Julianne Moore as a middle-aged lesbian couple bringing up their two teenage children, Joni and Laser in suburban Los Angeles. Both conceived by artificial insemination, the children decide to track down their common biological father without informing their parents. When their father, restaurant owner and lovable rogue Paul (Mark Ruffalo), duly lands in their lives, the family's dynamics are realigned by force as everyone struggles to come to terms with the far-reaching effects of his arrival.
