Towering Colossus-like over the mass of 1980s and contemporary Hollywood product, Martin Scorsese's acclaimed biopic of Jake La Motta, Raging Bull is a ferociously intense, unflinchingly honest and cinematically brilliant portrait of troubled middleweight champ Jake la Motta. De Niro's performance is simply awesome - making most others, and even his own later efforts, appear almost half-hearted.
Jake La Motta was the boxing world champion who rose rapidly to fame but swiftly fell from grace. On the road to success, La Motta married a beautiful young starlet, but the pressures of success soon made him paranoid and he ended up alienating both her and his brother Joey (Joe Pesci). Filmed in black and white, with brutal fight scenes and an Oscar winning performance by Robert De Niro. De Niro famously tailored his physical appearance to suit the role, putting on fifty pounds to portray the portly middle-aged La Motta.

the life of Jake La Motta, the prizefighter whose life
never seemed to venture out of the ring. Let me tell
you a story, he says, introducing himself in a
documentary about the film, and Martin Scorsese does
just that, unleashing the untamed beauty of a wild
animal. Robert De Niro as La Motta gives one of the
most amazing introductions to a character in his
opening speech - "I remember those cheers" - and one
of the finest screen performances to ever come before
a camera. An iconic and lyrical achievement, Raging
Bull exhibits a writhing, burning passion, a yearning

Robert De Niro gained sixty pounds to portray the
