Canadian zombie horror. When a deadly virus, which is spread through the repetition of certain words in the English language, sweeps through a small Ontario town, radio broadcaster Grant Mazzy (Stephen McHattie) and his team struggle to communicate warnings of the virus but only succeed in spreading it further, giving rise to extremely violent and murderous behaviour. Meanwhile, radio assistant Laurel Ann (Georgina Reilly) becomes infected inside the broadcasting booth the team has set up in an abandoned church...

This is an individual and quirky piece of work which showcases a much-underused actor, Stephen McHattie, here given plenty of opportunity to spread out as a disc jockey in an isolated radio station under siege from some violent and dangerously infected individuals (needless to say, the greatest threat comes from within the station). In fact, it is the writing and acting which affords the pleasure here; the menace from zombified nemeses is rather cursorily handled. But Pontypool is an unusual piece of work. < less
