Film Description
Blue in the Face is a freewheeling gem centred around Keitel's character Auggie Wren from Smoke and his Brooklyn tobacco store, where an endearing collection of laid-back eccentrics drop in for a chat and philosophise about nothing in particular.
Wang and co-director Paul Auster had so many ideas and incidents left over after shooting Smoke that this mostly improvised little delight was shot in just one week directly after finishing the other film.

Wang and co-director Paul Auster had so many ideas and incidents left over after shooting Smoke that this mostly improvised little delight was shot in just one week directly after finishing the other film. A freewheeling gem centred around Keitels's character Auggie Wren from Smoke and his Brooklyn tobacco store, where an endearing collection of laid back eccentrics drop in for a chat and to philosophise about nothing in particular. Whilst obviously less structured than the more substantial Smoke, this hugely enjoyable broadcast from the planet Brooklyn makes a delightful companion piece, and it's a real pleasure to spot all the actors who drop in and chill out, from Madonna, Lily Tomlin and Lou Reed, to Michael J. Fox and RuPaul, though cult director Jarmusch's hilarious riff on the way cigarettes are smoked in movies is the undoubted highlight. < less
