Film Description

Birdsong is BBC's adaptation of Sebastian Faulks' epic love story set against the background of the First World War. It was adapted for the screen by Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady).

The adaptation of the two-part film moves between 1910 and 1916, and sees Englishman Stephen Wraysford (Eddie Redmayne) travel to Amiens to stay at the family home of wealthy factory owner Rene Azaire (Laurent Lafitte).While there he falls desperately in love with Rene's young wife, Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), and they begin an illicit and all-consuming affair. Years later, after events have conspired to send them their separate ways, Stephen, now witnessing the full horror of life on the Western Front, decides to make contact with the one woman he only ever loved.
