The film is terrific in capturing the 'truth' about the US Civil war (or any civil war for that matter) - it shows the very confused tangles that had people fighting for the two sides and in fact how foolish it is to try and judge the motives of a soldier in the period simply by what uniform he was wearing.
Toby Maguire and Jonathon Rhys Myers are absolutely fantastic in this film. The films two moments with the greatest emotional thump are when the battle scared and weary veteran Toby reveals to his new friend and father figure on the evening of his marriage that he is only 19 years old, and the other scene is when the sick and tormented Jonathon confronts Toby at the end of the film just before he rides off to commit suicide by riding into his home town now controlled by the Union. Wow, what a powerful piece of cinema. The rest of the film is very historically satisfying, while being a great yarn. Great film, four and a half stars. < less
