MovieMail's Review

Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Natalie Wood star in this spectacular comedy that chronicles the first New York-to-Paris auto race in 1908. It's riotous entertainment, says Barney Kelley.

After hitting the bull's eye with the first two Inspector Clouseau films, director Blake Edwards embarked upon this, one of the most expansive (and expensive) comedies ever put on screen.

Curtis stars as 'The Great Leslie', a heroic stunt performer in the early years of the 20th century. His nemesis is the moustache twirling 'Professor Fate' (a rare villainous turn from Jack Lemmon), whose dastardly efforts to thwart Leslie's schemes invariably end in disarray. When Leslie proposes to race from New York to Paris, Fate cannot resist joining in. Joined by plucky suffragette Maggie DuBois (Natalie Wood), the wacky racers endure fire, freezing and fights as they hurtle forward to France.

This is, you will be unsurprised to learn, a distinctly broad film. Dedicated to 'Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy', The Great Race is an enthusiastic tribute to silent film comedies, complete with wild slapstick and the largest custard pie fight in movie history. With a cast giving it their all and comedy expert Edwards making sure it never runs out of gas, this is riotous fun.
