MovieMail's Review

Rita Hayworth takes the lead in this romantic 1945 Technicolor musical based on the theatre that never closed in wartime, The Windmill. It's one of Hayworth's best, says James Oliver.

During the height of the Blitz, the threat of bombs sends London's theatre-land dark. But there's one establishment that refuses to shut its doors: the lively Music Box thumbs its nose at the Luftwaffe and entertains punters with the prettiest dancing girls in town. Topping the bill is Rosalind Bruce (Hayworth); she's heard every chat-up line around, so it takes someone pretty special to whisk her off her feet. Squadron Leader Paul Lundy (Bowman) manages to do just that – but is he as honourable as he seems?

Based on the famous Windmill Theatre (the only auditorium in London that supposedly never closed during wartime), this lively musical focuses on the morale-boosting entertainers that helped Londoners endure the bombing. Of course, the Windmill was famously more ribald than cinema censorship would allow (performers would appear 'in the nip') and decency is preserved throughout. However, the song-and-dance numbers are spectacular enough to cushion this understandable, if disappointing, historical inaccuracy.

It's one of Hayworth's best: an engaging and colourful salute to everyone who ensured the capital kept smiling through.

Film Description

A 1945 romantic musical starring Rita Hayworth, Tonight and Every Night sees an RAF pilot (Lee Bowman) head to London to do a story on the famous theatre that never missed a performance during the Blitz. While there he falls for Hayworth's showgirl, but will she respond?

Based on the play by Leslie Storm, this musical wartime morale booster was used as a Technicolor vehicle for Rita Hayworth after her success with Cover Girl. It was nominated for Best Music: Original Song and Scoring Oscars, and a highlight is Hayworth performing the song, 'You Excite Me', which is often cited as one of Hayworth's best performances. Alongside Hayworth, Janet Blair plays the dance troupe's plucky ingenue and one of the chorus girls is none other than a young Shelley Winters.
